12:30 p.m. Prof. Yuwei Gu and students from his research group will conduct a series of simple chemistry experiments to demonstrate the properties of various molecules found in our daily lives. Examples of these demonstrations include using red cabbage extract to indicate acidic and basic solutions (i.e., pH), making slime with food-grade alginate, and quickly synthesizing nylon ropes. Simple explanations will be provided to clarify the chemical principles behind each demonstration. The audience will have opportunities for hands-on participation in some of the demonstrations.
